Contemporary Form of Wakatobi Woven Fabrics Presented at Fashion Nation 2018
Fashion students from BINUS Northumbria School of Design (BNSD) presented their works in a fashion show with the theme “Whispers of Wakatobi” at Fashion Nation 2018 at Senayan City. The fashion show was conducted on Friday, 20 April 2018, at the Senayan City Main Atrium, Jakarta.
Ratna Dewi Paramita, the Head of the Fashion Program at BNSD, said that this was the second time for BNSD to participate in Fashion Nation, and as usual, BNSD consistently showcases Nusantara’s culture on the runway. “Every year, we always try to find inspiration from various places in Indonesia because we want our designers to respect the local culture more. We want to show that traditional art can also be transformed into contemporary art,” she added.
“Whispers of Wakatobi” was chosen as the theme because Wakatobi is one of the top tourist attractions in the world. Ratna explained that there are so many local woven fabrics that are still not known by the society. Therefore, this event was a good opportunity for BNSD to introduce and develop the woven fabric from Wakatobi.
In this year’s Fashion Nation, BNSD also held a talk show about the story behind the works that were presented on the runway. The speakers in this talk show were Ratna Dewi Paramita, Stella Rissa (a designer and the owner of Stellar brand), Caramia (a designer and the owner of Tioria brand), and two students from the BNSD Fashion Program: Jul Hendri Steven and Clara Pranata.
